Thankfully, Spike isn't left all to his lonesome to nab the mischievous monkeys littered throughout time. The Time Station is the hub of Ape Escape. From the age of the dinosaurs to the Medieval period, there are a large range of environments and levels for Spike to traverse and capture monkeys in. There are seven worlds within Ape Escape: On the Loose- most of which with three levels apiece- and they put Spike within a wide variety of time periods and locales. Knowing this monkey madness could negatively alter the course of history, the Professor asks Spike to capture as many monkeys as possible, stop Specter, and rescue Jake from Specter's mind control. Childhood friends Spike and Jake arrive on the scene and along with the monkeys are transported back in time to various periods. He uses his added smarts to create helmets for over 200 monkeys and attacks a local laboratory which houses a time machine. On the Loose begins with a white-haired monkey named Specter putting on a special helmet that greatly increases his intelligence while also twisting his mind. It's a recipe for disaster, right? However, Ape Escape: On the Loose, even being hurt a little by the lack of dual analogs, is an engaging game that is worth the time to play. Imagine if you will, taking that game, putting it on a system with just one analog input, and releasing as an enhanced port as a launch title. The game was the first on the system to require the dual analog controller that debuted approximately halfway in the PS1's life. Bonus mini-games can be unlocked by collecting enough Specter Coins.Ape Escape initially released on the original PlayStation in 1999. ![]() Players can collect Specter Coins throughout the game by finding them in secret areas within each stage. Players' health can be restored by collecting cookies. ![]() A level must be cleared by a certain number of apes being captured any extra apes can be captured by revisiting levels. Some apes have weapons that allow them to attack players, or they have binoculars that let them see players from a distance. The color of an ape's shorts can also reveal their personality: yellow is normal, light blue represents timidity, and red represents aggression. The apes are equipped with helmets that have a siren that shows their state of alertness: blue shows that they are relaxed and unaware of the player characters' presence yellow, alert and red, fully alarmed, leading to an attempt to flee or become hostile. The left stick is used to move players, while the right stick is used to control the different gadgets, in the game's controls. Throughout the game, players are also in control of various vehicles, such as a rubber raft for crossing water and a water net for moving around underwater. As players advance through the game, more gadgets become available. ![]() The Stun Club, which can be used to stun foes, and the Time Net, which can be used to catch apes and bring them into the present day, are just two of the tools that players can use to hunt down and capture the apes that are scattered throughout the levels. Like in the main series, players must travel through several different environments to advance through the game. ![]() It is a collection of remastered versions of the first three Ape Escape games: Ape Escape 1 (1999), Ape Escape 2 (2002), and Ape Escape 3.
